Aider
Our verdict
A mature, model-agnostic choice for builders who want control over which LLM they use and cost. Every change is a git commit, so it's easy to undo. Less autonomous than cloud agents, which is often a feature.
- Who it's for

What it does
Aider lets you pair program with LLMs in your terminal to edit code in your local git repo. It builds a map of your repo and commits each change with a descriptive message.
How builders use it
- Add the files you want changed to the chat and describe the edit.
- Switch models per task: a strong model for architecture, a cheaper one for edits.
- Use /undo to drop a commit you don't like.
What to expect
Fast, reviewable, reversible edits with whichever model fits your budget.
